Today, so many people are contract life coaches to help them meet their career or relationship goals. At the same time, many businesses are hiring executive coaches to guide their top level management to produce the best results they can. It may be tempting to jump on the bandwagon, but before you decide to hire a life coach for your firm, ask you if executive coaching is right for you.

Life coaching is not like the stereotypical lay on the coach and talk about your mother kind of therapy. It is a chance to talk with a neutral party about the major goals in your life and how you should go about achieving them. In an office situation, an executive coach would sit down with a manager who had already identified that he needed a specific set of training. This manager, for instance, might want to better utilize technology in his daily work. The coach would then discuss strategies for reaching this goal and produce feedback as the strategies were implemented.

If your firm is going through a period of reorganization or if you recently promoted someone to upper management, it might be a good time for executive coaching. Some firms eschew any kind of life coaching because they feel it might cause their key players to look for work elsewhere. If this is the case, you should think of it as an opportunity to hire the perfect person for that position, rather than mourn the loss of an employee. An executive coach should help management to work to their fullest potential, wherever that may be.
