For visitors looking for something a little different, the upcoming Tenerife Design Festival is the thing. This celebration of creativity will give graphic and other designers worldwide the chance to display their works. The works are expected to demonstrate the importance of design in any country's cultural, economic and social development.
Tenerife Design Festival
Come October Tenerife will unveil another side to locals and visitors. The week-long Tenerife Design Festival will run from October 19 to 25, 2009. The event is meant to "fuse the current trends of design with the main features of the Canarian identity." It is expected to draw designers from around the globe as well as native Canarians who will all showcase their talents.
TDF is structured around five key areas, namely:
o TDFSigno: This is the collaborative arm of the Festival. Here designers work together to produce something new.
o TDFLab: This will be a series of workshops for professionals, students and anyone interested in design. The workshops will be held over three days. The aim is to enable networking and allow for the development of new works.
o TDFSolution, according to the creators of TDF, is meant to "spread and support the great advances in culture, innovation and design."
According to the Festival's official website, the city of Santa Cruz "will breathe design during TDF week." The aim is to involve everyone in some way in the activities of TDF.
o TDFAward will mark the recognition of three participants with cash prizes for their work.
The three main concepts that will tie everything together include:
1. Local identity
2. Landscape contrast
3. Tourism
The creations will in part use material found in Tenerife. A number of highly respected designers are expected in the island for the event. At least one lucky designer may end up with their design reproduced for worldwide distribution.
The Award
Not only will visitors have something to look forward to, but designers will also have the opportunity to display their work to the world. Three talented designers will each obtain the TDF Award diploma and a 5,000 euro (approximately 7,000 USD) cash prize.
To take home the award, designers must come up with a creative piece around the topic Tenerife Design Paradise. The design should depict the beach of the future and one of three themes, namely:
1. Objects that are part of a beach environment (except for sunshades and loungers)
2. Objects that beachgoers take with them to the beach
3. Objects that help in beach preservation (like litter bins)
Entries will be accepted from professional designers and design students over 18. TDF offers an ideal opportunity for up and coming creative minds to show what they can do.
